Monkeys in the city would love to eat the paper made by students of Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT). The reason being the paper has banana fragrance. Not because of any perfume, but because it is made from banana skin itself.
The experiment to use different kinds of materials to make handmade paper has won an award for the members of Clay Club at CEPT. A student representative attended a meet recently organised in Switzerland and explained the project called Pulp Fiction.
The award was given by Oikos, an international student organisation for sustainable economics and management. Cept students have experimented with products like recyclable material, cotton cloth, denim, jute, plants like bamboo, banana skin and campus waste like paper, newspaper, cardboard and many more items.
Since, the first workshop held in the Cept campus to teach paper making, the students have been experimenting to make handmade paper from the paper waste generated on campus.
This paper is occasionally used to make visiting cards and certificates.
Talking about the experience, one of the students at Clay Club, Pranav Gajjar said the student project attracted positive interest.
"They found the project interesting and also showed interest in holding the workshop jointly. But, things have not been finalised. One hurdle is distance," said Gajjar.
He also mentioned that Oikos representatives guided students about project funding and taking the project on a mass level. Currently, members of the club use the handmade paper on campus. "Certificates for the recently organised seminar on disaster management were made from the handmade paper," he added.
