Centre should use clout to ensure equality to Lankan Tamils: CPI(M)

The CPI(M) state unit today urged the government of India to 'use its clout' to ensure among other things, equality and autonomy to the Sri Lankan Tamils in that country.
  
The party executive urged the Centre to take up the matter with Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa during his official visit here on Tuesday, unit secretary G Ramakrishnan said in a statement here.
  
Stating that CPI(M) is against armed conflict as a solution to the ethnic issue in that country, he said it only affected the livelihood of the people and the economy of Sri Lanka, besides resulting in heavy loss of lives.
  
However 'the Sri Lankan government has not shown the smallest of intentions to ensure equality of Tamils and granting them autonomy,' he said.
  
He said the Sri Lankan government should hasten the rehabilitation of Tamils lodged in camps.
