Police on Wednesday arrested a mobile phone dealer in Vastrapur for allegedly forging documents of customers to sell mobile phone SIM cards.
Vastrapur police on Wednesday arrested a mobile phone dealer in Vastrapur for allegedly forging documents of customers to sell mobile phone SIM cards. The cops also seized more than 365 photographs, 46 forged application forms and 23 SIM cards from his shop.
Anjal Gandhi, the mobile phone dealer, was arrested from his outlet Samyarth Medical Store in Lad Society, Vastrapur early on Wednesday morning. The cops raided his store, where Gandhi also sells mobile phone accessories and medicines. The raid came after a man lodged a complaint against the dealer on Tuesday night.
In the complaint the man accused Gandhi of using his documents to sell SIM card to another person. Complainant Nishant Panchal, a resident of Srinivas Apartment, Lad Society, stated in his complaint that he had provided his passport-size photograph and a photocopy of his passport to Gandhi a fortnight ago to buy a SIM card of Vodafone.
"However, I came to know that the dealer had, afterwards, sold a SIM card of Airtel to another person in my name by using the documents and personal information I had furnished to buy my card," he said.
Acting on the complaint, Vastrapur police arrested Gandhi. While searching his store, cops found passport-size photographs of 365 people and other scanned photographs, 46 forged application forms and 23 SIM cards of various telecom companies.
The forms had personal details of somebody else and photographs of some other person, Vastrapur police inspector YR Gamit, who is investigating the case, said.
Cops said Gandhi admitted to faking documents to sell SIM cards and he even issued cards to those who did not provide a single required document.
Police suspect that there may be other people like Gandhi in the city who may be involved in such illegal selling of SIM cards. Vastrapur police have registered a case of fraud against Gandhi and started further investigation.
