Cell rings in arrest for chain snatchers

In a major breakthrough, the Sabarmati police nabbed a brother duo in connection with a chain snatching racket in city's prime areas like Vastrapur, Ghatlodia and others. The police acted on a tip off and arrested the duo after a mobile phone was reported as stolen from the Sabarmati area.

According to a source in the police, the two accused, Jitendrasinh alias Bhikhu and Narendrasinh alias Pinto, have confessed to at least 40 instances of chain snatching in different parts of the city. The source also said that the duo has been committing the crime for a long time now.

Ramesh Dave, head constable of the Sabarmati police station who cracked the case along with his team members, said that the two accused were earlier staying in a flat in Naroda. They stole a mobile phone belonging to a religious head of the Jain community, and the complaint was registered with regard to the same. The police were also informed that the duo was involved in other offences too.

While the duo has been involved in 12 instances of chain snatching in the Sabarmati area alone, complaints against them with regard to other offences has also been lodged in areas such as Vastrapur, Ghatlodia, Sarkhej and Gomtipur, said the source. The duo has been sent to remand by the Metropolitan court and will be produced before the court again on Monday.

The police have been facing a tough time with rising instances of chain snatching in the city. It was only recently, on July 27, that two unidentified men snatched a chain worth Rs25,000 of one Kundenben Naniti, a resident of Bodakdev. A complaint in this regard has been registered with the Vastrapur police.

In another incident on July 21, Kalavtiben Sharma and her husband were passing by the Blind People's Association on their two-wheeler when two unidentified persons snatched a chain worth Rs25,000 from her neck.
