The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is moving more officers to Gujarat and has asked the state police for additional vehicles and police personnel.

Though there has been no official word from the CBI, sources said the probe agency was gearing up for some major development in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

The sources said the CBI had called to Gandhinagar some of its SP-rank officers who were currently posted in other states. It has also asked for as many as 27 more vehicles from the state government and a unit of the State Reserved Police (SRP).

However, the sources could not say exactly how many CBI officers would be camping in Gandhinagar or for how long. “We have asked the state government to provide us more logistical support for our future operations,” a source in the CBI said.

A team headed by Amitabh Thakur, Deputy Inspector General in the CBI is already camping at the probe agency’s offices in Gandhinagar. More officers are expected to arrive here in the next few days.

According to sources, the CBI has picked up Ajay Patel and is questioning him at an undisclosed location. Patel is a close associate of Gujarat minister of state for home Amit Shah and has been absconding for some time.

However, this report could not be confirmed from other independent sources or official spokespersons.

According to sources, Amit Shah submitted his resignation to the chief minister late on Thursday evening, but Narendra Modi has not forwarded it to the governor.

The sources said the CM might ask Shah to reconsider his decision. However, this development, too, could not be officially confirmed. A source said that the probe agency’s investigations into the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case were almost complete.

The agency was now reportedly preparing to arrest those accused in the case whose names had cropped up during the
investigation.
