In a tale of charm, debt and revenge, a 19-year-old’s flirtatious nature cost him his life. Ajit Bharwad was flirting with a married woman whose brother-in-law and a friend decided to end the chapter by stabbing him to death in Sarkhej on October 18.

Cops have identified the two accused as Mahendra Chunara alias Balo, 21, a resident of Santoshinagar at Dholka road in Sarkhej, and his friend Sanjay Panchal alias Sanju, 20, also a resident of Dholka road, Sarkhej.

Police said Chunara bore a grudge against Bharwad, a resident of Fatehwadi in Daskroi, for a long time owing to caste differences which was fuelled further by Bharwad’s flirting with his sister-in-law. The case was investigated by local crime branch of Ahmedabad rural police and Sarkhej police. Cops came to know that Chunara’s friend Panchal, who was in debt of Rs25,000, assisted him in killing Bharwad.

Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat, district superintendent, Ahmedabad rural said, “Panchal wanted money and Chunara revenge. The duo, therefore, hatched a plan to kill Bharwad. For this, they lured Bharwad asking him to befriend a girl on the night of October 17. They took him to a remote area few metres away from JG College, off SG Highway and murdered him there.”

Bhagat said that it was Chunara, sitting as a pillion rider with Bharwad, who sliced the victim’s neck with a knife.

Terrified Bharwad slipped on the ground from his motor cycle and pleaded to be spared. However, Panchal, Chunara’s friend, came and stabbed Bharwad on his neck, back and stomach. Bharwad’s body bore 23 stab marks.

Police officials said that the way Bharwad was killed, they suspected involvement of women in the case. As cops began probe and interrogated several people, it came to their knowledge that Chunara had a clash with Bharwad long back and was looking for revenge.

Besides, Chunara recently came to know that Bharwad was eyeing his sister-in-law and found him flirting with her. Irked with his behaviour, Chunara decided to kill Bharwad.
