Alumni of city’s Mount Carmel School to participate in series of events beginning Saturday.
The Mount Carmel School has an 85-year-old glorious footprint in the city, but it is astonishing that the school did not have a formal alumni association. After two consecutive successful re-unions this year, the ‘sisters of Ahmedabad’ have formed Mount Carmel Alumni of Ahmedabad (MCAA) to bring together the Carmelites all over the world on a common platform.
“Kicking off a series of events and workshops, a cultural programme, ‘Revival - an evening to reunite and re-ignite old bonds’ has been organised coming Saturday. There are at least a few thousand alumni of the school in Ahmedabad,” said Pragya Misra, IT consultant in TCS.
“We have got a lot from the school; we wanted to give something back in some form. Plans are afoot to hold a series of workshops on issues like health, career counselling for students, art, craft and cookery. An hour will be kept free on every Saturday for alumni interaction,” said Soumya Rao, another member and an IELTS teacher.
Sister Prescilla Lobo, principal of the school, has set the ball in motion. “We want to reach out to all the Carmelites all across the world. They are an enormous pool of talent and we wish to utilise their strength to help the current Carmelites,” she said.
Significantly, most of the old schools in the country have a very strong alumni network, except this girls’ missionary school. “Several attempts have been made in the past, albeit failed; but this one is very serious. The alumni body will be formally registered soon,” said Rita Dasgupta, who works with the Institute of Hotel Management.
“Carmelites from different walks of life like doctors, dentists, educators, accountants, social workers, musicians, singers, beauticians, engineers, IT experts and mothers attended that meet,” said Anar Shukla, manager, online marketing inEducational Initiiatives and a member of the alumni committee.
