The explosion was so powerful that the sound of the blast was heard in entire Srinagar at a time when people were rushing back home for 'Iftar' to break the Ramzan fast.
Terror revisited Kashmir on Saturday when militants set-off a car-bomb explosion targeting a police bus outside the Srinagar Central Jail killing at least three people including two cops and a woman besides injuring nine others.
The toll is likely to go up as the condition of some of the injured is said to be serious.
Jamait-ul-Mujadeen militant outfit has claimed the responsibility for the attack. A caller of the outfit telephoned news agencies after the blast and owned the blast.
Police said the incident occurred around 6 pm when the police bus was returning to Pulwama after dropping the detainees at the Central Jail here. When the bus reached near Khati-Darwaza, the militants set-off the powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in the maruti-800 car.
In the incident two cops and a woman who was supposedly walking on the road were killed. The slain have been identified as Khadija of Khawja-Yarbal, assistant sub-inspector Sagar Singh and head constable Abdul Hameed. The explosion was so powerful that police bus was blown to shreds. The blast was also heard around four kilometer radius by the people. Several adjacent houses were damaged by the impact of the blast.
Inspector general of police, Kashmir range, Farooq Ahmad said the blast was targeted at the police bus and when it was coming from the jail, militants set off the explosive device. “The bus had come from Pulwama to drop the detainees in the central jail. When it was going back the militants triggered an explosion. We have started investigation into the incident”, said Ahmad.
The police have announced a reward of Rs ten lakh for providing information
regarding the militantsin this bomb blast.
