An international organisation, Humane Society International (HSI) will soon begin census of canines in the city.

The census will be conducted as part of an MoU inked between the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Animal Welfare Board of India for effective implementation of the national policy on community dog population control.

The MoU was inked between AWBI chairman RM Kharb, and Municipal Commissioner AMC I P Gautam, yesterday for canine birth control by sterilisation, of which canine census is a part.

A census of the community dogs will be conducted by HSI. The chairman of HSI will soon visit Ahmedabad to work out the modalities, a Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisation (FIAPO) statement said.

FIAPO has facilitated the meeting between the two bodies.

"The census of stray dogs will be conducted by an international organisation and the figures shall help AMC develop required infrastructure for sterilisation of dogs," Trustee of FIAPO Abodh Aras said.

"The traditional tong method for catching dogs will be done away with and new method of butterfly net, which is more humane, will be introduced," Aras said.

Later, AWBI registered NGOs capable of conducting dog sterlisation will be selected jointly by the board and AMC, he added.
