A candle light vigil was held at the Indo-Pak border here to mark the country's 64th Independence Day.

Members from Indian chapter of South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) and NGO Hind-Pak Dosti Manch, along with some guests from Pakistan, gathered at the Attari check post on the international border on the intervening night of 14-15 for the candle light vigil.

SAFMA members in Pakistan, which had been reciprocating the candle light vigil by its Indian counterparts for last two years, gave it a miss this year after their country denied them permission, according to the delegation members.

A colourful programme was also organised near the Indo-Pak Wagah border by Hind Pak Dosti Manch and Folklore Research Academy.

Punjabi singers Hans Raj Hans, Lakhwinder Wadali Diljaan, Satinder Bitti, Satwinder Satti from the Indian side and Zafar Alla Lok from Pakistan, left the audience spell bound with their performance.

Senior journalist and Manch's president Kuldeep Nayyar, Magsaysay Award-winner and social activist Sandeep Pandey, and Folklore Academy president Ramesh Yadav also participated in the event.

SAFMA Pakistan spokesperson Farah Waraich and South Asia Partnership member Saida Deep actively participated in the candle light vigil as they had arrived in India two days ago.

To ease friction between the two nuclear powers, the peaceniks drafted a resolution and urged the governments of both the nations to settle all controversial issues through dialogue.

Nayyar said people-to-people contact exercise between the two nations could be enhanced with hassle free visa system.

He said visa counters should be set up at the Wagah border on both sides to facilitate travel between the two nations.
