With just 20 days left for the Commonwealth Games, vital security equipment to protect railway stations in Delhi are yet to be installed, because of the delay in procuring them.

Northern Railway has awarded the Rs22.6 crore contract to Teramer, an Indo-Israeli joint venture, for installing high-quality CCTV cameras, baggage scanners, vehicle scanners, door-frame metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors at the stations in the national capital to strengthen the security system before the Games.

"Since most of these equipment are to be imported, it is taking time. But we hope that these sophisticated equipment will be here soon for installment," said a senior Northern Railway official involved in executing the upgraded security systems at stations.

The contract has been awarded to strengthen security systems at 10 stations in the Delhi region.

"However, keeping the Commonwealth Games in mind, the security upgrade at New Delhi station, Nizamuddin station and Old Delhi station would be carried out on a priority basis," the official said adding, "Once the equipment arrive, these would be immediately installed and made operational."

There will be about 430 internet protocol-based CCTVs, including moving and zoom cameras, dozens of baggage X-rays, door-frame metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors and vehicle scanners.

"All the CCTV cameras would be connected to a central server and we have set up control rooms for their operation. Once operational, these three stations will be the first to have such upgraded security system in the country," he said.

Besides installing the hi-tech security gadgets, railways will undertake a massive exercise to carry out fencing of these railway stations.

Railways are also hiring a few sniffer dogs for securing stations during the Games.
