A private firm executive, accused of bribing Commonwealth Games organising committee officials to bag lucrative contracts for providing logistics to the mega sporting event, was refused bail today by a Delhi court.

The court rejected the bail plea of Comfort Net Traders India Pvt Ltd's director Sandeep Wadhwa saying the allegations against him are serious and if released on bail, he may interfere with the investigation.

Wadhwa was arrested on March 7 by CBI for allegedly paying huge amounts of bribe to various C'Wealth Games organising committee officials on behalf of Nussli (Switzerland) Limited.

"Considering the seriousness of the allegations, evidence against the accused on record, investigation is at initial stage and the apprehension that Wadhwa may interfere with investigation, I am not inclined to enlarge the accused on bail," special CBI judge OP Saini said.

The court noted "a witness has stated that he had received Rs20 lakhs in bribe from Wadhwa on behalf of M/s Nussli Limited, for releasing the payments."

"The witness also stated that all the four firms named in the FIR including M/s Nussli (Switzerland) Limited had agreed to pay 2.5% of the payments as commission," the court said.

While pleading for bail to Wadhwa, his counsel Amit Khemka said CBI has not yet questioned and arrested the MPs and bureaucrats who were holding top positions in the organising committee.

"Wadhwa had no role in committing any illegality as alleged in the FIR. He was only a supplier to the contractor and had no independent contract with the organising committee," he said adding there is no incriminating evidence against him.

Opposing the bail plea, the CBI prosecutor said the probe is still continuing and CBI is yet to recover various documents and examine several witnesses from various cities.

"The allegations against the accused are serious and there is evidence that he had paid Rs 20 lakhs in bribe to different OC officials. If the accused is released on bail at this stage, he may tamper with the documents and influence witnesses," CBI prosecutor Akhilesh said.
