The congested Walled City areas of Ahmedabad, defiled by years of pollution, may soon be carbon-free. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has envisaged a number of innovative ideas under its ‘Inner City Transit Plan’.

The Walled City areas, falling in the eastern part of the city, have a labourer population of around 1.14 lakh and witness around three lakh vehicular movements per day. In order to reduce air pollution, the AMC plans to introduce an eco-friendly transit system involving battery-operated mini buses.

This idea is part of the efforts of the civic body to implement an eco-friendly transport system, alongside the introduction of pedestrian space, encouraging hawkers to use electric three-wheelers, the CNG-operated Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and CNG autorickshaws.

“We have identified some routes for the eco-friendly, battery-operated buses. These routes have a very high flow of vehicular traffic. The buses will be semi low-floored, with a capacity of not more than 30 passengers,” a source close to the development said.

The primary motives in this case are to propagate the use of a mass transit system against private vehicles and to encourage the use of eco-friendly transport in the case of private transport.

Another interesting aspect is to do with encouraging female hawkers to use battery-operated or electric three-wheelers instead of handcarts. “There are around 7,000 female handcart pullers in the city. They are facing the threat of losing their means of livelihood as diesel- and petrol-run three-wheelers are the preferred means of transportation because of the rapid service,” the source said, adding: “The AMC plans to help these handcart pullers switch to battery-operated three-wheelers by managing grants or soft loans,” the source said.

The civic body has also planned to introduce multi-storey parking to manage traffic congestion in the inner city and Walled City areas. Three such facilities have been planned, keeping in mind their proximity to Geeta Mandir, Kalupur railway station and the AMTS bus terminus.
