The 'burgle and burn' gang has targeted one more house of a government official in south Delhi in the second such incident in a month despite arrest of the gang leader a fortnight ago.

The fresh incident was reported from the house of Sunil Sharma in Laxmi Bai Nagar in Sarojini Nagar from where similar incidents were reported earlier, a senior police official said.

Sharma, who works in the cabinet secretariat, was out of town with his family when the incident took place last night. He was in Haryana's Kaithal area.

"Neighbours noticed smoke emanating from the house and informed fire brigade and police," the official said.

Investigators believe it was a case of "burn and burgle" as the thieves appreared to have erased all evidence.

"We are waiting for the Sharmas to return so that we can ascertain things stolen from the house," the official said.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

Earlier on February six, the house of Vinay Shukla, a businessman, was burgled and later set on fire by the gang when his family was in Kanpur to attend a marriage function.

In connection with the case, gang leader Sanju was arrested on February 19.

The group was allegedly involved in burglaries, after which they would burn the houses they targeted, in Laxmi Bai Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Kotla and R K Puram.

The gang leader had escaped from an observation home over five times over the last seven years and had earlier been involved in several cases of theft and burglary.

He used to dispose of articles they had stolen through one of their contacts in Bihar.
