Chief minister Ashok Chavan will have to weather a stormy monsoon session beginning Monday. The opposition plans to corner the ruling Congress-NCP combine on issues like the Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary dispute, best-five and the apex court’s decision allowing sale of American author James Laine’s book on Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Chavan’s biggest challenge would be to ensure perfect coordination between the allies to enable the government to take on the Sena-BJP combine which promises to project a united front. In fact, the chief minister has already urged his cabinet colleagues and the administration to be on their feet so that the government is not caught napping on any issue raised on the floor of the house.

Shiv Sena and BJP’s decision to boycott the customary pre-session tea party hosted by Chavan had said it all. Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray set the agenda for the elected legislatures indicating that they would be unrelenting in their attack against the government. “The Congress-NCP government is a failure on all fronts,” he asserted. “On the Karnataka-Maharashtra boundary dispute, they have been caught napping. On best-five policy, they are taking the beating every day unmindful of the students’ careers. The state failure is because of lack of concern and shoddy work done by the legal department.”

The leader of the opposition in state legislature, Eknath Khadse, said, “We are determined to make life difficult for the government this session. Whether it is price rise, education policy or border dispute, their complacent approach has caused immense suffering to the people of state.”

Thackeray has directed the Sena members in state assembly and council to exhaust their lung power by raising public issues and not rest till the government acts.”

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has kept its agenda under wraps as it wants the government to revoke the suspension order against its four MLAs. MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar said, “We are going to fight for the rights of the state and Marathi manoos.”
