And you thought you were the only one searching the internet for some additional information.

It is a known fact now that city-based bookies have begun placing their bets on the Champions Trophy. But what many don't know is that the rates are not fixed on the basis of a whim or loyalty. In fact, the bookies do a thorough research before placing their bets. And helping them in their endeavour are many websites religiously dedicated to betting.
Take for instance, the website named www.betfair.com, which is visited by many bookies across the world.

Sources told DNA that 'satta rates', i.e betting rates, placed on various teams playing in international matches are fixed only after referring to the website.

Sources said majority of the bookies in India refer to the UK-based website. In the UK betting is legal. A source, who is in the know of the betting business, said, "Before placing a bet, every bookie refers to the website where rates for various teams are given. These rates often keep changing in a flash."

When a bookie was contacted, he said, "Many times we do seek information from the website and often decide the rates after referring to it." DNA had earlier reported that there are at least 15 main bookies in Ahmedabad who have around 200 people operating under them. The number of bookies operating in the city has gone down considerably due to increased police vigilance. Earlier, the city had more than 500 bookies in the city.

Sources said that many bookies also have a Wifi connection using which they are able to determine the rates before the live telecast on the television shows a batsman hitting a six.  Bookies in Rajkot, Mehsana, Surat, Vadodara and other places where 'satta' is played also refer to the website.

Sources said that rates for bets placed on sporting events such as football matches or horse races are also available on the website. In fact, it provides betting rates for many other games played at the international level. Sources said that in UK, where betting is legal, a part of the bookies' earning goes to the government by way of tax.

Though popular among bookies, many betters and punters for such bookies are not aware about the existence of the website.
