The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has created a history of sorts. Probably for the first time in the history of placement of engineering students in the state, around 50 BE students from various colleges affiliated to GTU have bagged packages of whopping Rs27 lakh or 41,000 Euros per annum from auto giants like BMW and Mercedes-Benz in Germany.

Lat week, around 130 students with highest cumulative performance index (CPI) were interviewed by an HR firm, Die-PA GMBH, and top company officials.

According to GTU vice chancellor Dr Akshai Aggarwal, the company officials selected around 50 students and would send them offer letters within a fortnight.

The V-C said the companies have offered annual package of 41,000 Euros or about Rs27 lakh to students.

"As per the bifurcation of the package, the students will get around 33,000 Euros as take-home salary.  The companies will provide free training for eight weeks, accommodation once the students join the company after training, travel cost to India once during two years. According to the company officials, these would cost the company around $8,000 dollar or Rs5 lakh per annum," Dr Aggarwal said.

He said that the students who appeared for the interview were from colleges in rural Gujarat.

"All we emphasised was on highest CPI and not any other aspect. There were students from rural parts as well," he said. He said that this was an achievement for the GTU as in such a short span of the varsity's existence, the students had got an opportunity to work with auto giants overseas.

"I agree that the varsity has hundred problems staring at us. But I am sure that we will overcome all of them with strong efforts like this," he said. Once the students accept the offer letter, they might have to head for Germany in August this year.

The recruitment was result of an MoU that GTU had signed with
Germany-based HR firm Die-PA GMBH to place students in auto giants.

The HR firm has 10 auto companies in its client list which includes German companies like BMW, AIRBUS, Mercedes-Benz, Bosch and VOITH.
