The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in its pre-monsoon preparation, has made a list of 308 spots in the city prone to water logging and flooding. Out of these, 55 locations have been identified as chronic flooding points.

However, this season, the wrath of the rains will be largely faced by the suburbs as compared to the island city. Civic officials stated that the flooding sites in the island city have remarkably reduced. The case is not the same in the suburbs.

“The number of flooding spots in parts of the island city has come down. This can be attributed to large-scale strengthening and repair of storm water drains. The roads that had slightly caved in, permitting water logging, have been reinstated,” said a senior civic official.

Areas in Tardeo, Byculla and Grant Road have seen a remarkable dip in the number of locations prone to water logging.
As per the data compiled by the civic body, 185 areas prone to water logging fall in the suburbs. The figure for the island city stands at 82. Out of the 55 chronic flooding locations, only 10 spots are located in the island city. The suburbs have a major chunk — 45 — of the chronic flooding spots.

Bandrekar Wadi, Andheri Subway, Navrang Cinema , JP Road, Milan Subway, VM Road, JVPD, Motilal Nagar, Cama Industrial Estate, SV Road, Dahisar Chowk, Thakur Complex, Nehru Nagar, LBS Marg, Gavanpada, Central Railway subway are amongst the chronic spots in the suburbs.

The island city has four wards which will be susceptible to water logging. SVP Road junction, Alankar Talkies, Saat Rasta, Reay Road, Dinshaw Petit lane, Hindmata cinema, Geeboy Lane, Worli Naka and Dr E Moses Road have been identified by the BMC.
“With the number of chronic flooding spots increasing in the suburbs, the susceptible water flooding spots will constantly be monitored by the disaster management cell of the civic body,” the official added.

The BMC last monsoon deployed 123 water pumping machines to flush out water. This time around, 150 pumping machines will be installed in the vicinity of flooding spots. So far, 50 of them have been installed across the city.
