The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to tackle the malaria menace in the city in the coming monsoon. Apart from carrying out fogging across the city, the civic body will also request the airport and railway authorities to remove stagnant water from their premises.

According to BMC, about 98 people died due to malaria out of the 11,266 registered malaria patients in 2008. In 2009 198 deaths were reported, while cases registered were 17,505. In 2010, 137 people succumbed due to malaria and 20,418 cases were reported. This year, the BMC has already begun identifying and destroying mosquito-breeding sites.

"Besides the construction sites, water-logging found on the premises of the Bombay Port Trust, National Textile Corporation, railway yards, Army and Navy provides breeding ground to mosquitoes, causing the spread of malaria. Hence, we will ask these establishments to undertake fogging activity," Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar told reporters here.

He added, "The BMC will carry out fogging activity at 11 of the 14 buildings of the Bombay Port Trust, as three buildings will be demolished. Fogging will also be undertaken at four mills of the NTC."

"Water-logging is also found at the mill lands where junk is kept. The land belonging to the army and navy are also a problem area, so the anti-malaria activities will be undertaken soon," the civic chief said.

"The railway and airport authorities will be asked to take appropriate steps to contribute in controlling the disease. Airport officials will be asked to carry out fogging at both- national and international-airports," he said.
