A blast that injured eight people in a busy market place at Tura last evening has prompted the administration in Meghalaya to review the law and order situation in the run up to the puja celebrations.

The administration of West Garo Hills has convened a meeting tomorrow to review the security arrangement ahead of the puja festivities, deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal told PTI.

While no breakthrough has been made in the investigations on the blast, Goyal said the situation was normal even as he reassured that there was “absolutely nothing to panic”.

The administration in neighbouring East Garo Hills district also said there was a need to re-look the law and order situation ahead of the pujas in the wake of the blast.

Eight people were injured, one of them critically and two others seriously, when unidentified persons hurled a bomb last evening at the main market place at Tura, the district headquarter town of West Garo Hills.

Arun Rai, who was stated to be critical after excessive bleeding, has been referred to a hospital Guwahati, while two others were undergoing treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.

Chief minister Mukul Sangma condemned the incident and said it is an act of cowardice by miscreants who are a menace to the society.

“The government will make every effort to investigate into the matter and nab the culprits,” he said in a statement.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Not ruling out the possibility of local goons being involved in the incident, a police spokesman said “all angles are being probed”.
