The Amul Vikas panel of the Congress routed the BJP’s Amul Parivartansheel panel in the elections of the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (KDCMPUL), better known as Amul dairy union.

The Congress’s panel captured all the 12 seats on the board of governors for which polls were held. Even the lone seat for independent candidates was won by the Congress backed candidate, Ranjitsinh Patel. The BJP’s panel could not win even one seat in the election.

The polls were held in Anand on Thursday but the results were announced only on Friday.

The Amul union’s incumbent chairman, Ramsinh Parmar, who led the Congress’s panel, is likely to be elected chairman once again by the members of the new board of governors. He has been chairman of the Amul dairy union for the last 9 years (three terms). If he is elected chairmen once again, this will be his fourth term as chairman.

In Thursday’s election, Parmar polled the highest number of votes (617) followed by Dhirubhai Chawda (594 votes) and Rajendrasinh Parmar (592 votes).

The Amul dairy has long been a stronghold of the Congress, which is why the results have not surprised anyone. But, for the BJP, which had worked very hard to win the prestigious Amul dairy poll this time, the defeat is another in a series of humiliating setbacks suffered by the party recently.
