It seems there is competition among the two state departments in releasing figures for number of children in the state, probably to get more funds from the Centre.

It seems the Gujarat government is confused about the number of children living in the state. Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesperson Dr Manish Doshi states that by declaring varying figures for total number of children in the state, the Gujarat government is misleading the people.

In an official communiqué, Doshi stated that according to the education department there are 60 lakh kids in Gujarat; health department figures put it at 86.34L and it's 74.94L according to the latest census.

Doshi said that standard of medical services in primary health centres, vacant seats of doctors and similar problems are blighting the healthcare sectors in Gujarat and the education department is a hub of corruption. But it seems there is also competition among the two state departments in releasing figures for number of children in the state.

"Gujarat government has declared that 86.34L kids were given polio vaccination in the state, but the education department had announced 60 lakh kids at the time of Pravesh Utsav.

"And, according to the latest census report, Gujarat has a total of 74,94,176 children in the 0-6 age group. In that case, how can the number of children in all age groups be less than the number of children in the 0-6 group when polio vaccination is given only to children up to 5 years of age?" he asked. He said, Gujarat government should stop misleading people and announce the correct number of children living in Gujarat.
