Chief minister Narendra Modi has appointed eight BJP leaders as the chairmen and vice-chairmen of boards and corporations of the state government.

Former agriculture minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama has been appointed vice-chairman of Gujarat State Planning Commission while former revenue minister Kaushik Patel has been made acting chairman of the 20-point programme implementation committee. Chief minister Narendra Modi will head both these bodies.

Former minister Mahendra Trivedi has been appointed head of Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board while former Union minister and MP Vallabh Kathiria will head the Gau Sewa Board.
The other four appointments are as follows: Jayanti Barot has been made chairman of the Gujarat Housing Board; former Palitana MLA Mansukh Mandavia has been appointed chairman of GAIC; former MLA of Dhrol-Jodia (Jamnagar) Purshottam Bhojani has been made chairman of Jamnagar Urban Development Authority; and Poonam Makwana has been appointed chairman of Ati Pacchat (very backward community) Development Board.

A significant appointment is that of Vallabh Kathiria who was considered a member of the Keshubhai Patel camp as he had raised his voice against Modi.

These appointments are being seen in BJP circles as Modi's effort to strengthen the party's organizational structure and retain the faith of party workers. There was a growing feeling among party workers that they were not getting positions in statutory boards and corporations, a practice that was normal under chief ministers before Modi.
