The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the first time in so many days openly announced that it is indeed gearing up for pre-term polls.

The moment senior leader LK Advani predicted early polls saying the UPA government was on a suicidal path and party must gear up “as you never know what is in the offing,” the other leaders gave out a war-cry during the party’s national executive meeting on Saturday.

The BJP has been so far strategically evading questions on the issue of mid-term polls even though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently attacked the Opposition for getting restless to be in power, trying to destablise his government and force early elections. To this the BJP had reacted sharply and denied allegations.

But on Saturday the party clearly drew the battle line, even though it knows the UPA government has sufficient numbers to carry on till 2014.

“We cannot say with confidence that this government will run till 2014. Hence, the party must be prepared for early polls. The government has lost both on account of popularity due to price rise and on credibility due to corruption. Its internal dynamics has gone haywire. Though our good wishes are with them, we do not think they will be able to complete their term,” leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said. The BJP is sincerely hoping that one or the other coalition partner will fall apart at some point of time.

However, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj was more cautious and practical in her approach and said that elections could not be won just because the UPA was in disarray.

“People are looking at us and we must prove ourselves. We have to learn from the mistakes of the UPA government and position ourselves much more strongly politically, on image building, aggressiveness and should bee seen as a proactive party while reaching out to people at the grass root level.

Though the BJP officially delinked Advani’s rath yatra with elections, party sources unofficially said that the yatra will help building momentum against the government and help BJP position itself better for elections through this mass reach out effort. Meanwhile, Advani made it a point that the party will campaign heavily against the victimisation of its workers who are in jail in the cash-for-vote scam and how the whistleblowers are made accused.

While Jaitley clarified that there was no rift between Modi and Advani, the disgruntled Uttarakhand leaders Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Bhagat Singh Koshiyari were given important positions in party in an attempt to appease them.
