BJP today said it favoured the inclusion of Hyderabad in the proposed state of Telangana.

Asked if BJP supported the demand that Andhra Pradesh capital Hyderabad be a part of Telangana, senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu said "when the central government will bring the Bill, we will react."

Later, Naidu endorsed his party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar's view that Hyderabad will be part of Telangana, saying "he (Javadekar) is in-charge of the state, I support what he said."

"BJP welcomes the announcment made by the UPA government with regard to starting the process of creation of a separate state of Telangana. Though late, we welcome the announcement," he said.

However, he was critical of the government for not sharing details of how it planned to carve out the new state.

"We wanted the government to share with the House the contours of the plan and roadmap for creation of the state. Unfortunately, the government did not have the courtesy to take Parliament into confidence especially when it is in session," Naidu said.

Asserting that BJP was in favour of smaller states, Naidu said such states were better in terms of administrative convenience, economic and development viability, geographical contiguity and presence of a broad political consensus.

He said almost all the political parties of Andhra Pradesh had favoured formation of Telangana during the elections.

Naidu indicated Congress took the decision on formation of Telangana after it was compelled by circumstances to do so.

"Government appointed Pranab Mukherjee Committee on the issue but it did not do anything," he alleged.

Naidu said when a sensitive issue like carving out of a state came up, regional feelings were bound to come out but government should take initiatives to deal with them.

"In 1969, there was an agitation for Telangana and more than 200 people died," Naidu said, adding, a similar number perished in the demand for a separate Andhra Pradesh in 1972.

He said the NDA government had faced similar challenges when it formed Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal.

Naidu accused the Congress of "not doing enough homework" and failing to even take its own MPs and MLAs into confidence on Telangana.
