BJP today said the spate of attacks on military installations in Pakistan points to a threat that nuclear facilities there may fall into wrong hands and demanded de-nuclearisation of the neighbouring country in global interest.

"BJP believes that the internal security situation in Pakistan is alarming. Mehran naval base in Karachi was attacked despite being well-protected. In the last two years, several military installations there, which are highly guarded locations, have been attacked," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

About 15-20 Taliban gunmen had attacked the Mehran naval base on Saturday night. Fourteen people were killed and two US surveillance planes destroyed in the attack.

Rudy gave an illustrative list of defence installations attacked in Pakistan in the past two years in cities like Faislabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Islamabad, among others. Several people lost their lives in these attacks.

"We are aware that Pakistan today has the fourth largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world. We know rogues of Taliban who have been targeting military facilities will try to lay their hands on nuclear weapons in an attempt to make a dirty bomb," Rudy said.

He insisted that there is an urgent need to "sanitise" Pakistan for world peace.

"There is an imminent need for the world to denuclearise Pakistan. The present situation there post-Osama Laden makes the issue very pertinent," Rudy said.

He maintained that this was more so as Jehadi elements had entered the Pakistan military.

"A matter of deep concern for India and the whole world is that there is full-fledged Jehadisation of the Pakistan army... Pakistan military establishment is not secure due to the entry of jihadi elements," Rudy said.

He maintained that the seriousness of the threat to Pakistan can be understood from the fact that the attack on Mehran naval base continued for more than 17 hours and though the establishment is well-guarded, the Taliban gunmen had succeeded in penetrating it.

"Even when Pakistan is on highest alert after the Abbottabad incident in which Osama bin Laden was eliminated, the men managed to get in," Rudy insisted.

BJP said the question that now arose is how Pakistan was going to protect itself.

"Pakistan has become the hotbed and epicentre of terror. Moreover, it has the rare mobile nuclear capability," Rudy said.

The main opposition also asked the US to check where its $100 million given to Pakistan for securing its nuclear installations had been spent.

In a reference to the reported court statements of Pakistani-American LeT operative David Coleman Headley in Chicago, Rudy said now it has been proven beyond doubt that ISI perpetrates terror against India.

The list of Pakistani defence establishments which were attacked include Faislabad military camp (March 8, 2011), Lahore Cantonment (March 10, 2010), navy headquarters in Islamabad (December 2, 2009) and military headquarters in Rawalpindi (November 2, 2009), among a host of others.
