BJP today condemned the reported assurance of external affairs minister SM Krishna to the World Bank that India would not seek financing of any Arunachal Pradesh-specific project, saying this raised "serious questions about our sovereignty and territorial integrity."

"BJP condemns this assurance from the external affairs minister to the World Bank. This raises serious questions about the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India. We want a clarification from the government on whether this decision had cabinet approval," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Prasad said it had been agreed between India and China that they would resolve all their disputes bilaterally.

"Why is China trying to make Arunachal Pradesh a disputed territory?" he said, adding "it is our charge that there is a sudden but deliberate shift in the foreign policy of the country under the UPA government."

A newspaper report today said quoting a World Bank document that Krishna has assured that India will not pose any Arunachal Pradesh-specific project to it. India's executive director in ADB Pulok Chatterjee has verbally communicated this to the World Bank and in writing to finance secretary Ashok Chawla on February 12.

Prasad mentioned the Sharm-el-Sheikh joint statement in which Balochistan was included, UPA government's alleged silence on frequent incursions from China in Arunachal Pradesh.

He also mentioned the recent statement of external affairs minister Shashi Tharoor, whom he referred to as "twitter-minister", that Saudi Arabia could act as an interlocutor between India and Pakistan.

BJP also took a dig at prime minister Manmohan Singh on this issue by mentioning his statement in Parliament yesterday that India enjoyed the best of relations with China and his mention of co-ordination between the two countries at the
recent Copenhagen climate change summit in this regard.

Prasad sought a clarification from Singh on whether the assurance to World Bank on Arunachal Pradesh was a part of this claim of "best of relations" with China.

"We want to say with polite firmness that we will not tolerate this. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and there can be no compromise. We want a clear, categorical and formal clarification from the government of India on whether assurance has been given to World Bank (under Chinese pressure)," Prasad said.

The BJP will also bring up this issue in the on-going session of Parliament. "The budget session of Parliament has been going on since February 22. Why was the Parliament not informed about this?" Prasad said.
