While BJP leaders celebrated the SIT 'clean chit' to chief minister Narendra Modi on the basis of media reports, Congress leaders said the saffron party was spreading lies.

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, Gujarat unit BJP president RC Faldu and party spokesperson IK Jadeja said that the party was informed by the media that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court had filed its closure report in the court. They claimed that it "is a slap on the face of the people who are criticising and defaming Modi and Gujarat".

State government spokesperson Jay Narayan Vyas said, "We only want to say that the entire investigation in the matter has been done by the Supreme Court. The Apex Court-appointed SIT investigated the original complaint and also the numerous complaints that were made by anti-Gujarat elements.

"Moreover, the Supreme Court was reviewing the report every month for the last two years. It is clear from the reports that these elements, who tried to defame Gujarat government by derailing the legal probe, stand exposed."

Meanwhile, the Congress said the Modi government was spreading total lies over SIT 'clean chit' to him.

In a statement, state unit president Arjun Modhwadia said, "In fact, BJP leaders like former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and then governor Sundersingh Bhandari had criticized Modi for failing in his 'Raj Dharma'. The SC has criticised Modi government on several occasions in different cases. The SIT report is not the final court report that it can be considered as Modi's total exoneration."
In New Delhi, the BJP termed SIT 'clean chit' to Modi as a 'big relief'. "No evidence against Narendra Modi, says the SIT. A big relief for us. Ten years of vilification campaign must stop," Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

BJP national spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said that though the riots and deaths in Gujarat were unfortunate, Ahsan Jafri's widow Zakia's plea that Modi too should be prosecuted has been refuted by the SIT. "Investigation cannot be continued on manufactured evidence," he said.
