BJP today accused the Congress of becoming intolerant and frustrated due to it "failure" to face challenges like price rise and terrorism and alleged this attitude was reminiscent of Emergency days and has come at the "behest of Sonia Gandhi".

"An intolerance and frustration is developing in the Congress due to its failure on the issues of terrorism, price rise, international relations, nuclear liability bill and diplomacy," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He alleged that Congress spokespersons, at the behest of the top leadership of their party, were making statements against Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and filmstar Amitabh Bachchan to hide the failures of the government.

"Congress attitude is reminding us of the Emergency. In a democracy we can have political adversaries. But today Congress is treating its adversaries as enemies. This is a grim reminder of the Emergency," Rudy said.

Rudy said the "explicit arrogance" of the Congress today was visible in the language used by its spokespersons and insisted that this was done on the orders of the top leadership of the ruling party.

"The statement made by Congress spokesperson about Modi
or the statement made by Maharashtra chief minister Ashok
Chavan on Bachchan is not in isolation and it has be at the
behest of party president Sonia Gandhi," Rudy said.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari had compared Modi
to mafia don Dawood Ibrahim.

"Whenever a spokesperson speaks his views cannot be taken
as his personal opinion. He cannot express his personal views
(from the party platform)," Rudy added.

Seeking to draw a comparison between the recent Congress
onslaught against Bachchan with the ban on artistes and movies
during the Emergency, Rudy cited a White Paper on "Misuse of
Mass Media During Internal Emergency" released in August 1977
by the government on the movies banned during the Emergency.

The list includes Bachchan's Sholay, and other controversial movies likes 'Aandhi', 'Kissa Kursi Ka' and 'All the President's Men'.

"Jagdish Tytler, who was then the Youth Congress president, got all songs of Kishore Kumar banned in All India Radio," Rudy said.

BJP has been very vocal in defending Modi and Bachchan from Congress attacks in the controversy surrounding the latter's presence at the inauguration of Bandra-Worli Sealink last week and related issues.

"Bachchan is a superstar, a megastar as well as the brand
ambassador of Gujarat. He is above all controversies. He
deserves the highest respect," Rudy said. When asked if there
was any politics behind BJP defending Bachchan, he said,
"Calling a spade, a spade is not politics."
