In the backdrop of growing attacks by Maoists, BJP today accused the Centre of inept handling of the problem and said India cannot afford to lose the battle against the ultra-Leftists "whose mantle is to destroy India's parliamentary democracy".
The party suggested a three-pronged strategy to take on Maoists--taking back areas under Maoist influence, carry out development there and launch an ideological battle against Naxalites.
"The BJP takes it as inept handling of the growing menace of Naxalites in India. In fact, India can't afford to lose the battle against the Maoists whose object is to dismantle and destroy India's parliamentary democracy", a resolution adopted at the BJP national executive meeting here said.
The resolution was proposed by former Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda and seconded, among others, by Chhatisgarh chief minister Raman Singh.
Sharpening its attack on the UPA government, BJP in its resolution said the "myopic UPA government" did not realise that even to execute the developmental activities in areas of Maoist influence, it was extremely important that these secluded areas be taken back from Maoist control and handed over to civilian administration.
"Unless, civilain control is established in these areas and these areas are freed from weapons, violence and landmines, there can be no meaningful development activities in these areas", it said.
"Where possible to execute development projects, the same must be done with utmost priority and where it is not possible to execute development programmes without dismantling the Maoist control, it is important to first wrest the control of these areas and then execute the development programmes", it said.
There was also a need to carry on an ideological battle against Maoists, the resolution said.
"There should be coordination between the Centre and the states as law and order is a state subject. But when law order problem transgresses into a threat to India's sovereignty and parliamentary democracy, the Centre cannot shrug off its responsibility, the resolution said.
Earlier during his inaugural speech, BJP president Nitin Gadkari warned the UPA government that it was "playing with fire through the deliberate attempts of showing sympathy to both Naxals and victims of their violence and said such an approach betrayed lack of seriousness on the part of the Centre.
