Melinda Gates has her eyes set on India. Sources say that the wife of arguably the wealthiest man in the world might further intensify her charitable efforts in the country.

“They (Bill and Melinda) have already announced their plans to increase their grant by another $100 million. Melinda is enthusiastic about India, and wants to invest more towards HIV awareness,” says a source in the health ministry.

“The key thing to understand is that our money looks very large to people, but it’s absolutely tiny in these matters. We can play the role of the catalyst. The Indian government needs to put more money behind health,” Melinda is reported to have said when she last visited India in March this year. She adopted a village in Bihar following that.

Sources claim that the Gates are planning another hush-hush holiday in Rajasthan, where they will also meet the officials of Melinda’s foundation in India. Bill  in a statement also hinted about a trip to India to understand more about the avenues where he can focus his efforts on. He also opened a blog that documents his visits to different countries including India.

“The trips I will document (in his blog) will include Nigeria, to check on the status of polio eradication; northern India, to understand more about improving vaccine coverage; and school visits in the United States. The site will complement my annual letters as well as the foundation’s web site…which has a lot more information about the topics in this letter,” says Bill in a statement.

Sources confirm that a trip by one of the Gates is on the cards early next year.  “The details of the trip have not been made public, but they are keen to come to India before proceeding to Bangladesh. We will have to wait for an announcement from their end,” adds the source from the health department.
