Ahmedabad police commissioner Sudhir Sinha was reportedly blamed by at least four IPS officers for not handling Sanjiv Bhatt’s case in a friendly way. At the meeting of IPS officers’ association on Saturday last, these four officers criticised the city police chief over the issue of Bhatt’s arrest and the subsequent raids at his house.

According to highly placed sources, Sinha was almost “cornered” by the four senior IPS officials who criticised the police chief over the manner in which Bhatt’s case was handled. The officers told Sinha that Bhatt was their colleague and also happened to be a senior officer.

“They said that since Bhatt was a fellow colleague and a senior officer, the police commissioner should have handled the case in a more friendly way. Bhatt should not have been locked up at police station along with hardcore criminals,” sources said.

The sources said that officers Satish Verma, AK Singh, Rajnish Rai and Atul Karwal protested in one voice, saying that right from Bhatt’s arrest to the second raid at his house and not allowing his family members to meet him in the police custody _ all this could have been done in a more friendly way. A highly placed source said that the IPS officials argued that there had been occasions when very important persons were allowed to stay out of lock-up in spite of serious criminal offences.

When asked about the meeting and issues raised by the IPS officers, police commissioner Sinha said on Thursday that the police action in connection with Sanjiv Bhatt was taken as per the law. “There was nothing illegal that was done to Bhatt and the whole case,’’ he said.
