A man who complained to the police against an illegal betting racket was killed just hours later. Three policemen, who reportedly gave away the complainant’s identity to the betting mafia, have been suspended.

About 15 men killed Jagdish, 28, with knives, swords and baseball bats in northwest Delhi on Sunday evening. Jagdish, a resident of Ashok Vihar, had filed a complaint with the Ashok Vihar police station against Sita Ram, a gangster who used to run a satta racket in the vicinity. He had specifically requested the police to hide his identity from Sita Ram.

A few hours later, around 10 pm, 15 people came to Jagdish’s shop, dragged him out and killed him on the streets. The assailants were armed with baseball bats, knives and even swords.

“My brother had gone to file the complaint and he is now dead. The police are responsible for his death,” said a relative requesting anonymity. The killing yet again exposes the links between criminals and the police.

Three policemen, Devnath, Rahiv and Vineet, have been suspended from duty. Sources said they had disclosed the victim’s identity. The main accused in the case, Sita Ram, and his associates Pappa, Bhudani and Pappu, are on the run.

“The accused will be caught soon. We are also investigating why the police gave away the informer’s identity. The guilty will not be spared,” a senior police officer said.
