Soon, peace will not remain confined within the environs of the Gandhi Ashram but will spill over to the surrounding areas as well.

Under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Rs201 crore project, ‘Revitalisation Plan for Gandhi Ashram Area’, the 1 km stretch from the Morarji Desai Smarak to Chandrabhaga Bridge on the Ashram road will be developed as a pedestrian pathway. The green and serene pathway in a no-vehicle zone will accommodate facilities such as an information kiosk, a green walkway, an exhibition haat, seating areas and sculptures and paintings.

The revitalisation plan includes the renovation of the Dandi bridge, and the widening of roads and the beautification of the surrounding areas.

As for the pedestrian pathway, the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology and the Vastu Shilpa Foundation of renowned architect, BV Doshi, propose to divert traffic from the Ashram road by establishing a 900 metre bridge.  The six-lane bridge will run from a location opposite the Gandhi Ashram to a spot between Nandanvan Jain Temple and Radhaswami temple on the 132 Feet ring road.

Also proposed is the creation of a new road that will take traffic from the street opposite the Gandhi Ashram a little ahead of the Morarji Desai Smarak, where the pedestrian pathway will end.
“We wanted to make Gandhi Ashram a serene place,” said BV Doshi.
“We need to divert vehicular movement if we want peace on the Gandhi Ashram road.” He said the area in front of the Gandhi Ashram would be developed as a pedestrian pathway with an appreciable green space. “A plaza will also come up in the pedestrian space where sightseers can relax,” he said.

The pedestrian pathway will be 36.60 metres to 39.62 metres wide, according to the proposal. “The project, which holds emotional significance not only for the city but also for the nation, will also focus on the restoration of monuments at the ashram,” said a senior AMC official.
