Horrified, she went into the kitchen and set herself ablaze. She died instantly while her mother, who rushed to rescue her, suffered burns and is recuperating in hospital.
The incident took place around 8.45 am at their home in Vighneshwara Nagar on Magadi Road.
Anitha’s mother Vani (name changed), 38, took to prostitution as she struggled to meet both ends after her husband’s death.
Vani, a native of Koppa in Chikkamangalore district, had come to Bangalore along with her daughter and husband five years ago.
Her husband died three years ago following a cardiac arrest.
Initially, she joined a private nursing home as an attendant. She used to stay in Sunkadakatte and later shifted to Vigneshwara Nagar. However, her life took an ugly turn when she met Jayamma staying in a neighbouring street.
Jayamma was a ‘Madam’ and she dragged Vani into flesh trade. Soon, Vani quit her nursing home job and started working for Jayamma.
On Wednesday, around 8.30 am, Jayamma came to Vani’s home with a man. As Vani refused to entertain him a quarrel started.
Hearing the noise, Anitha came out of her room. On seeing her, Jayamma asked Vani who she was. Jayamma then asked Vani to send the girl. As Vani resisted, Jayamma and the man began to drag the girl.
Horrified, the girl ran into the kitchen and she locked herself in. Then, she poured kerosene and set herself afire.
As the flames engulfed the girl and she cried in agony, the customer and Jayamma ran away. Vani suffered burns as she rushed into the kitchen to douse the fire.
