A 42-year-old woman, N Pavitra, was killed in Coconut Garden, Old Bank Colony, Konankunte Cross, and the assailants fled with cash after setting fire in the house. Pavitra was smothered at 11.30am on Friday. The incident came to light when neighbours saw smoke emanating from her house. They called the fire department, which sent two fire tenders to douse the fire. Later, Pavitra was found dead on the bed. She had been smothered using a dhoti, said deputy commissioner of police (south) Sonia Narang.

An amount of Rs50,000 kept in an almirah was stolen from the house. “The murder was committed by somebody known to Pavitra as there are no signs of a forced entry into the house,” said Narang.

Pavitra might have let the culprit in around 11am. The police found a teapot and other refreshments on a table, which makes the police suspect Pavitra was killed by somebody known to her.

Pavitra was home-alone when she was attacked. Her body was left on a mattress. An electric wire was used to set the mattress on fire. The assailants wanted make it seem like the fire was caused due to a short-circuit.

Pavitra’s husband Nanjappa told the police that he was informed of the tragedy when he was in Bidadi. Nanjappa said: “Pavitra never allowed strangers to enter the house. She always spoke to them through the window. Today, she had offered tea and sweets. I’m sure somebody known to her committed the crime.”

Nanjappa owns a real estate firm. Pavitra is survived by her husband and two children. The body has been shifted to Kempegowda Hospital for postmortem.  The police have formed a team to nab the culprit.
