The police will resort to theatrics to reduce attention-diversion cases in the city. They will soon don actors’ roles to enact various methods adopted by conmen to divert the attention of gullible citizens and decamp with their valuables.

The police personnel will educate people to avoid falling into traps set by persons who claim to be policemen and steal jewellery from women. “We’re planning to conduct dramas during property parades. Constables will be on stage to depict how gangs con elderly women,” said B Dayanand, joint commissioner of police (crime, east).

“CDs with videos depicting the modus operandi of robbers and means to apprehend them will be distributed among the people,” said DCP (crime) DM Krishnamraju. “The performance will concentrate on how culprits dupe innocent people so that people are aware of their tricks,” added Dayanand.

People should be aware that a police officer will not approach anybody advising them to remove jewellery due to a crime that has occurred nearby, said DCP (west) SN Sidramappa.

In the past four years, a gang has become infamous for mastering the attention-diversion method. The gang has struck in Gulbarga, Bidar, Belgaum, Anantapur, Hubli, Bidar, Hassan, Shimoga, Hubli, Belgaum, Tumkur and Mysore and Goa. The gang targets women who are over 55 years of age.

The gangsters pose as policemen and take gold jewellery from their victims, saying it is unsafe to wear the jewellery since robbers are on the prowl in the neighbourhood. They have fake police identity cards to win over the victims’ confidence. Once the victim hands over the jewellery, the gangsters pretend to place the valuables in the victim’s bag,  but instead fill the bags with imitation jewellery or stones.

Though many gangsters have been arrested, they have not revealed the names of their associates even during interrogation, said a senior police officer. These gangsters are migrants from Iran and stay on the city’s outskirts. They commit 10-15 offences in groups and leave the city for some days.

Woman duped
Miscreants posing as policemen duped a woman into giving her jewellery to them in Tilaknagar police station limits on Thursday.

At 11am, two men approached Krishnaveni, 62, a resident of JP Nagar, and told her to place her jewellery in her bag since robbers were on the prowl in the area. In her complaint, Krishnaveni said the duo told her to remove her jewellery and put in her bag.

While she was placing her jewellery into her bag, they told her that she had dropped some ornaments on the road. They pretended to pick it up and place it in her bag. The duo then left the area and when Krishnaveni looked into her bag, her gold jewellery was gone.
