The entry of 3G technology into India witnessed mobile handsets being used to commit crime, posing problem for the police. Sleuths of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), however, are undeterred and say they are well trained to tackle such issues.

DV Guruprasad, DG, CID said the department had spent Rs3 lakh each on two of its staff for training in the US to tackle such offences. “This is the most advanced cyber crime unit and others are replicating this module,” he said.

Apart from the two staff, others are also being trained to tackle cyber offences. “The staff here has been undergoing constant training sessions. Every Saturday, we have a session where the trained staff shares knowledge with their counterparts. This is strengthening the department. Even 3G-related problems would be tackled as per the requirements and there is no problem in doing that. The number of technically trained staff has increased,” said Guruprasad.

He expressed his happiness over the performance of CID in 2010.

The year saw 66% of CID cases chargesheeted, especially, the cases which were sent to it after the local police had washed its hand off. Giving credit to the department, Guruprasad said that proper training sessions had kept the department motivated and helped in solving a number of cases involving big names like Nithyananda and serial killer Mohan Kumar.
