ith the separate Telangana movement threatening to cause longterm damage to the performance of the IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) sectors, the industry has started lobbying with politicians seeking safety and security for its assets and workers.

A group of about 20 top honchos of the sector including representatives of leading companies like Infosys, Microsoft, Genpact and other IT and ITeS outfits met chief minister K Rosaiah, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu.

“We are definitely tense about the shutdown calls and the agitation for Telangana and protests for united Andhra.

Irrespective of the political developments, we wanted all the politicians in the ruling and Opposition parties to understand the sentiments of the IT sector and its requirements,” the central head of a leading IT company and a member of the Hyderabad Software Exporters Association (HYSEA) told DNA without willing to be quoted. According to him, all the three including the two Opposition leaders appreciated the concerns of the sector and assured that there would be no impact on the IT and ITeS sector.

“We are concerned about two basic things - safety of our assets and security of our people. The shutdowns are affecting our logistics as well. If people can’t reach office on time, we lose business. The overseas customers are not bothered about the local political developments. They want the projects to be executed without interruption. More than the IT companies, the BPOs are getting affected due to logistics disruption since these are real-time projects,” another centre head of an ITeS company said.

However, none of the IT and ITeS companies have lost any business so far. The impact, according to them, would be visible only in the long term since some projects might go to companies in the other states.

Meanwhile, chief minister Rosaiah has assured the industry that there would be a team to protect the IT assets in Hyderabad. The IT and ITeS sector in Hyderabad employs about 2.3 lakh employees directly in addition to about six lakh indirect workers. About 1,500 IT and ITeS companies in the state generate over Rs30,000-crore revenue per annum.

According to the chief minister’s office, Rosaiah has assured industry representatives that a mechanism would be put in place to secure the assets of the sector. An inspector general rank officer would be nominated to track the IT sector’s requirements on a regular basis in addition to setting up a special security task force and a toll free number for recording grievances.

Meanwhile, the high court on Saturday granted conditional permission to the mega-student meet being organised by the joint action committee of the Osmania University students who are preparing to host five lakh students from 11 universities.
