There is no respite for the six-month-old Omar Abdullah set-up. As the government was trying to quell fresh protests sparked by the discovery of mutilated body of a missing Srinagar youth, another mysterious death of a woman in remote Trehgam area of Kupwara district rocked it on Thursday.

Police have arrested Ashiq Hussain, a jawan of the Territorial Army (TA), for the alleged murder of Amina. “We have arrested him (Ashiq) and a case has been registered. We have sent the body for post-mortem,” B Srinivas, inspector general of police, Kashmir range, said.

The death triggered massive protests in the area, with people taking to streets demanding justice. They pelted stones at the forces and began smashing everything in sight to try and enforce a bandh.

Kupwara senior superintendent of police Uttam Chand said the jawan had gone to Amina’s house on Wednesday evening and she was found dead on Thursday morning. “Her brothers blamed the TA jawan for the death. So, we have arrested him.” Chand said Ashiq was a distant relative of Amina.

Separatists and PDP condemned the incident. “It is necessary to demilitarise civilian areas and roll back AFSPA to create an atmosphere of confidence and security,” former deputy chief minister and PDP leader Muzaffar Hussein Baig said.

The fourth death since May 30 has pushed the National Conference government on the back foot. It occurred 24 hours after the mysterious death of 20-year-old college student Asrar Mushtaq in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the capital remained tense for the second straight day. Protestors clashed with police in Maisuma, where Asrar’s family stays, as a bandh was observed in Srinagar.
