Are they relieved, or demoralised?  How is the Gujarat's minister of state, home, Amit Shah's arrest being viewed by the state's bureaucrats  - the IPS and the IAS, which forms the backbone of the government.

After Shah's sensational arrest and an eventful week, the entire police administration is stunned, to say the least. His arrest by the CBI has, without exception, also come as a surprise to the bureaucracy, which speaks volumes about Shah's clout in the system.

Some have reluctantly admitted that perhaps it was inevitable, but most felt that he simply wouldn't be 'touched'. The events of the last week of July have indeed debunked many a popular perception in Gujarat.  The result is that the policemen are not feeling reassured enough to follow political orders which can create a problem for them in the future. However, one common sentiment has been that of relief. "Significantly, there is some level of sympathy for the arrested IPS officers, but not for the minister.

We are only executing orders; we are pawns in a larger political battle, and therefore often victims. This is a rare case where role of political architects is being looked at, not just the doers," said a senior IPS officer.
