Auto driver turns auto thief, arrested in Ahmedabad

He had stolen six vehicles in as many months before the law caught up with him.

Anandnagar police on Thursday arrested one Kalu Thakor, notorious for stealing six autorickshaws in the last six months. Thakor's in-laws provided the tip-off which led to the unraveling of the massive crime.

An auto-driver by profession, Thakor was married to a girl from Narol area of the city. He was an alcoholic, which was the reason for quarrels between him and his wife. Fed up of Thakor's drinking habits, the girl divorced him six months ago and went back to live her parents in Narol.

Distraught over this, Thakor, in an inebriated state, went to his wife's place four days ago and entered into an argument with her and her parents.

The ensuing ruckus attracted attention of other locals who forced him to flee from the spot. However, he forgot to take his autorickshaw with him. The locals handed over the vehicle to Vatva Police. They checked the autorickshaw's papers, only to find that the vehicle was registered in someone else's name, and not Thakor's.

When the real owner was contacted, he revealed that his autorickshaw was stolen a few weeks ago, a complaint regarding which was lodged with Anandnagar police station.

Following recovery of the stolen autorickshaw, Anandnagar Police started a search operation to track down Thakor. They learned that he had stolen had stolen another autorickshaw on Monday from Anandnagar area.

Cops on Wednesday finally nailed Thakor. On interrogation, he revealed that he had stolen and sold six CNG autorickshaws from Satellite and Anandnagar area in last six months.

Police have recovered all the stolen autorickshaws and have booked Thakor for the crime.
