A 28-year-old Australian woman was molested allegedly by a young tailor after he offered her a lift, a senior police officer said today.

The incident took place on Monday night and the accused identified as Ravi Chawla was arrested yesterday, he said.

"The victim knew the tailor. So she did not hesitate when he said he will give her a lift," the officer said.

The victim came to India with her husband and had gone to Chawla's tailoring shop in Mandir Marg on March 21. Chawla invited the couple for dinner at a restaurant near India Gate.

The couple are software engineers.

"While they were having dinner, the woman felt tired and wanted to go back to the hotel. Her husband then tried to get a radio taxi. However, Chawla offered to take her to the hotel while her husband stayed back," the officer said.

On way, the official said, the complainant claimed that Chawla allegedly molested her, to which she objected and asked him to drop her back at the restaurant.

He allegedly pretended that he did not know the route back to the hotel. However, around half an hour later, he dropped her back there.

"The complainant then approached police following which a case was registered and Chawla arrested," the officer said.

According to Delhi Police, a total of 55 rapes have taken place this year. "This year rape cases have come down by 32.93% and molestation cases are down by 24.79%," the official said. P
