The Australian government is "deeply concerned" about attacks on Indians in that country and is taking effective steps to improve the security of visiting students, the Lord mayor of Adelaide said in New Delhi today.

Michael Harbison, the top official of the Australian city, visited the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters in Town Hall here and met mayor of Delhi Kanwar Sain.

He briefed Sain on "the efforts of the federal government of Australia in improving the situation after attacks on Indian students," an MCD release said.

The federal government is "deeply concerned" about the incidents and "is taking effective steps to improve the situation and security of the visiting students", he said.

Harbison said the educational institutions have been told to ensure better environment and security for the students.

Sain said the two countries have very good and cordial relations and such incidents are really an issue of serious concern for both the governments.

"If the Australian government seriously takes effective steps to improve the situation, it will remove fear psychosis among Indian students in Australia. It will also be conducive to better relations between the two countries," he said.

Most of the attacks on Indian students have occurred in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria province.
