Running short of cash at the IGI airport's international terminal? You will have to cough up some extra amount to use the ATM.

There is only one ATM installed at the visitors' lounge of the arrival area and one needs to pay a fee of Rs 80 to enter the lounge and take cash from the ATM.

"It is ridiculous to pay Rs 80 just to take money from ATM. How we can claim to be a world-class airport when we don't have such a basic facilities available at the airport?" complained Kumud Shekhar, an advocate and a frequent flyer.

He had to face such a situation a few days back when he had to book a ticket from an airlines' office at the airport.

"My debit card did not function at the airline's office so I went to take out cash from ATM, which they said was at the visitor's lounge," he said.

"When I reached there I was stopped at the gate by private security guards, who refused to let me in saying I will have buy visitor's ticket for entry, even for taking money from ATM," he said, adding "this is fleecing."

Security personnel say altercations over the issue have become a regular feature.

"People coming here have to face this problem everyday and sometimes it results in a heated exchange of words," said a security official deputed at the IGI airport.

Complaining about lack of ATM facility, another passenger Amit Choudhary recalled that "once I had no money, I asked them to allow me, but they refused to enter."

"I was only allowed to enter when I assured them that I will buy an entry ticket after taking cash from the ATM," he said, adding no one expects such rude behaviour at airport.

The airport, which is a gateway and an exit for thousands of passengers every day, does not have an ATM outside the terminal of the international or domestic terminal buildings.

According to airport operator, Delhi International Airport Ltd, there was an ATM of a nationalised bank outside the IGI's arrival terminal earlier but "after their contract expired it has not been renewed."

A DIAL spokesperson said that they were in the process to ask the banks to set up their ATMs at the airport.

"ATMs would come up at near the ticketing counters at the domestic terminal and also at the international terminal in the near future," a DIAL spokesperson said.

But he refused to give any specific time and date, which means till ATMs are installed, passengers and visitors will have to shell out money on buying visitor's ticket for taking money from ATM.

When asked if DIAL make some arrangement for those in need to take cash from ATM at the international terminal, he said "they will have to buy entry tickets, as even we could not enter the terminal if we don't have our identity cards."
