The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2010, for admissions to leading national law institutions in the country, is slated for May 9. This year, the entrance test is being conducted by the National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU-B).

Last year, around 15,000 candidates attempted CLAT 2009 at 16 centres in the country. CLAT is organised by the 11 national law schools on a rotational basis.

The first CLAT was held in 2008 by the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. In 2009, it was conducted by the NALSAR University, Hyderabad. CLAT 2011 will be hosted by the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS).

CLAT 2010 authorities have stated that there will be centralised counselling for admission this year. This mode of operation was meant to be tried for the first time in 2009, when it was shelved on the consideration that the whole process might prove expensive as candidates would have to travel long distances and bear accommodation expenses as well.

This year, the non-refundable deposit that candidates on the merit list will have to pay to make their interest in the seat known has been increased to Rs25,000, from Rs10,000 last year. This deposit amount is later adjusted against the fees paid at the time of admission.

“We increased the non-refundable deposit to Rs25,000. This was done based on our experience last year, when students paid Rs10,000 but still did not take up the admission offer,” said Prof V Vijaykumar, National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

Application forms for CLAT 2010 can be downloaded from the official website, www.clat.ac.in. The forms are also available at branches of the State Bank of India across the country.

The application fee for admission to both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes is the same. For general and OBC category students, the application fee is Rs2,500. For SC and ST candidates, Rs2,000. The last date for filled forms to reach NLIU by registered post is April 2.
