The Asaram  ashram at Motera has removed encroachments from the 51,000 square yard government land on the Sabarmati river bed.

The ashram authority's move comes after a government notice was issued to them on January 5, 2009 asking them to do away with the encroachments within three days. The ashram authorities have removed a bore-well and wire fencing on the riverbed.

Uday Sangani, public relation officer of the ashram said that there was no encroachment on government land. Sangani in a statement said that the fencing had been done to protect the plants and it cannot be called as encroachment.

"The bore-well was for the public's use and was two meters away from the boundary. Yet to avoid any controversy the ashram authorities removed it," he said.

Ravindrasinh Vala, mamlatdar of Daskroi, said that his office had issued a notice to the ashram asking them to remove encroachments within three days or face action.

He, however, seemed ignorant about the fact that the ashram had acted on the notice. Earlier, the ashram authorities had asked for a stay against removal of the construction, but was denied.
