City-based artist Arvind Patel is one of the 10 artists from the country to be selected for the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi awards. The Akademi is the apex body of art in the country.

Patel, 58, is the only artist from Gujarat to get the award this year. The award carries a purse of Rs1 lakh and a plaque with it.

The institute will give out awards to the 10 young contemporary artists at its annual national exhibition beginning in Chennai on August 27, a senior Akademi official said.

The exhibition of contemporary art at the regional centre of the Akademi in Chennai will feature works by 117 emerging artists.
Tamil Nadu governor, Surjit Singh Barnala will inaugurate it, Akademi secretary, Sudhakar Sharma said.

“The works for the exhibition and the awardees were selected by a two-tier jury. An initial jury comprising Prabhakar Kolte, Jai Jarotia, Hanuman Kamble, Jaikrishnan Agrawal and A Viswam selected 117 artists from a list of 8,000 submissions. A separate jury comprising Vijay Bagodi, Prem Singh, Pankaj Pawar, Anandmay Banerjee and Anil Kumar short-listed the 10 young artists for the award,” Sharma informed.

Patel is a seasoned artist and he works in contemporary and semi-abstract art forms. He likes to depict the beauty of various manmade objects like utensils, knives, pots etc in his work.

Sharing his feelings following the announcement, Patel said, “I try to find new interpretations of these objects. The beautiful characters of these objects attract me. As for the award, I would say it gives me a kick to do better work, it boosts my zest and works as catalyst.”

Patel had also received a senior research fellowship from the central government for exploring new forms and expressions in visual art painting.

Apart from Patel, the other prize winners are Gayatri Apte (Delhi), Neeraj Ahirwar (Madhya Pradesh), SK Sreenivasan (Chennai), Rajesh Pratap Srivastava (Kolkata), S.G. Maurya (Uttar Pradesh), Bibhuti Sharma (New Delhi), Mohan Dattatreya Shindne (Nasik) and J Saigal (Delhi).
