Tax havens like Swiss banks encouraging corruption In India. This at least seems to be the view of RTI crusader Arvind Kejriwal, a key figure in the Anna Hazare’s campaign against corruption and one of the persons who drafted the Jan Lokpal Bill.

A Swiss media delegation, escorted by officials from their embassy, on Thursday afternoon visited Jantar Mantar where Hazare is sitting on indefinite fast since Tuesday.

During an interaction they posed a query regarding black money stashed in Swiss banks by Indians, to Kejriwal.

Kejriwal said: “Swiss banks are responsible for corruption in India. Some people in India have parked their ill gotten wealth - the crime money, the extortion money, the Hawala money, the drug money - in Swiss banks as they know nobody will come to know about them.”

“Not just Swiss banks but all other tax havens are also responsible. Why do not Swiss authorities reveal name of Indians who have accounts in their banks,” Kejriwal said.

When one of the Swiss journalists talked about absence of a treaty between two nations, Kejriwal promptly replied that was nothing but an excuse.

“Neither the Swiss government is serious about the issue nor the Indian government. If Indian government was serious why did not it ratify the United Nation’s convention against corruption. Once that is done it will be easier for Indian authorities to get information from foreign authorities,” Kejriwal added.

Though no one knows the exact amount of black money stashed in foreign banks, it is estimated to be in range of lakhs of crores.
