Sarkhej police PI MM Jhala, who was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday, was produced before the sessions court, Ahmedabad (rural) on Tuesday. Jhala has been sent to two days police custody till March 17. Jhala has been booked under the corruption Act for demanding bribes from the accused to go slow in the investigation.

While seeking his remand for five days, the prosecution alleged that Jhala had been absconding ever since his involvement was revealed by a co-accused in the case during the investigation.

Moreover for the period that he went missing, the police have to find out where he went and whom he had contacted during that time. The police further claimed that they are yet to find out about the involvement of other officers of the police station in the case.
Jhala's name came up during the interrogation of Gordhan Prajapati, a constable attached with the Sarkhej police station.

Prajapati was arrested by the ACB, earlier this month, for accepting bribe, which he had allegedly taken to ensure 'soft behaviour' towards a man arrested in connection with a land-grabbing case.

As per the Prajapati's statement recorded before the ACB, he had demanded bribe on the instruction of Jhala and was collecting money on his behalf. Further, as per the police case the accused had initially demanded a sum of Rs5 lakh but agreed at Rs3 lakh.

However, ruling down the prosecution's allegation, Jhala's advocate on Tuesday pleaded that Jhala had no role to play in the case and was not absconding. He argued that Jhala was on leave as he was unwell but was very much available in town. Opposing the remand application the advocate said that Jhala's remand was not needed for the case investigation. However, the court after hearing the argument from both the side sent Jhala for police custody till March 17.
